What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Same-day dental crowns are customized dental restorations that are made using computer-aided design and manufacturing. Ultimately, they allow us to create your custom crown without needing to send your impressions to a dental laboratory and wait for the final products. Instead, they are crafted right here in our office!

The goal of your same-day dental crown is the exact same as a traditional dental crown that you are familiar with. It is designed to protect teeth that are weak, damaged, or decayed. Unlike traditional dental crowns that require two appointments to be completed, CEREC crowns are crafted and placed on the same day!

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

The first step when getting a CEREC crown is for your dentist to remove a small amount of enamel from the affected tooth. Most of the time, this is done with a local anesthetic to numb any possible discomfort. Then, your dentist will take digital impressions to generate a 3D model of your tooth. This is sent from the computer to our in-office milling machine. After about an hour, the machine crafts a crown from tooth-colored dental material. This is completely personalized to match the size, shape, and color of your natural tooth. Lastly, we will place the crown and make any needed last-minute adjustments. Once everything looks and feels great, you will be free to go!

The Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

  • Convenient: You only need to attend one appointment instead of two.
  • No Temporary Crown: When you get a traditional dental crown, you have to wear a temporary one for a couple of weeks. This isn’t as comfortable as your final restoration and lacks durability. CEREC crowns eliminate this part of the process.
  • Cost: You might think that same-day dental crowns are more costly than traditional ones, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Same-day crowns are often comparable to traditional crowns when it comes to the cost.

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns FAQs

What Does CEREC Stand For?

CEREC doesn’t refer to some corporate brand or company; it stands for “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.” In other words, it points to the technology that makes same-day dental crowns possible.

Remember, CEREC same-day dental crowns are made right in a dentist’s office. That means they’re crafted “chairside” – in full view of the patient – and quickly restore the treated teeth. This crafting process is also “economical” in terms of the time and hassle it saves you.

How Durable are CEREC Crowns?

CEREC dental crowns are about as durable as regular ones; they can withstand the same force that lab-made kinds can. To that extent, you can trust them to work for many years (given the proper care).

You see, same-day dental crowns use the same materials as lab-made types. They’re made of high-grade porcelain that’s as strong and durable as it is beautiful. The result is that same-day dental crowns can last a pretty long time when they’re well-maintained. If you avoid bad oral habits, they’ll often have lifespans of 15 years or more.

Will I Have Dietary Restrictions with a Same-Day Crown?

With regular dental crowns, a patient has to wear a temporary restoration until the final placement. They’ll then have to alter their diet so this non-permanent cap isn’t damaged during the wait. Luckily, same-day dental crowns don’t involve such dietary restrictions.

The simple truth is that same-day dental crowns don’t have you wear temporary ones. Since they can be made and placed in one visit, you don’t need a placeholder due to some extended wait. You can immediately enjoy permanent caps that are durable enough to handle most foods. That said, you’ll still need to protect the same-day crowns from teeth grinding, injuries, and so on.

Who is Eligible to Receive a Same-Day Crown?

All in all, anyone eligible for a lab-made crown can get same-day kinds. Both sets of crowns treat the same problems, so they usually have the same patient requirements. Given that fact, good same-day crown candidates will suffer issues like:

  • Cracked or misshapen teeth
  • A recently-received large filling
  • Severe tooth damage
  • Cosmetic issues like tooth discoloration

Of course, only a dentist can confirm if you qualify for same-day dental crowns. Talk to Dr. Weaver or Dr. Cole to learn whether treatment would help.
